Songs for the Dogs (and Cats)

I’ve been on a Beatles kick lately (OK, I’m always on a Beatles kick), and a few weeks ago I was at a coffee shop, unable to control the urge to hum and dance to “Martha My Dear.” I had been listening to the White Album that morning, and for some reason that particular song lodged in my mind.

The great thing about being obsessed with one of history’s all-time greatest bands is the limitless resources for examining the music and the band. Sources suggest this song was either penned for or named for Paul McCartney’s dog Martha.

I was listening to the song again several weeks later, on the way to work, and got to wondering: Could I make a playlist entirely of songs about/inspired by pets? I only came up with three on my own (including Martha), then turned to my twitter friends for additional inspiration. Even still, at this point this playlist is merely EP-length. What would you add?

Songs for the Dogs (and Cats)

  1. Martha My Dear by The Beatles (The White Album)
  2. Murder (or a Heart Attack) by The Old 97’s (Fight Songs)
  3. Heavenly Day by Patty Griffin (Children Running Through)
  4. Wolves (Song of the Shepherd’s Dog) by Iron and Wine (The Shepherd’s Dog)
  5. Feed Jake by Pirates of the Mississippi (Pirates of the Mississippi)
  6. A Plea from a Cat Named Virtute by The Weakerthans (Reconstruction Site)

OK, so “Wolves” might be a stretch. Even so, I’d like to hear what you’ve got to add!

And in the coming weeks, I’ll be adding plenty more interviews with musicians, as there are a lot of great acts on their way to Birmingham! For now, fun with playlists.
